WHAT IS SCANDANIVIAN DESIGN?

Scandinavian design is an aesthetic movement known for its simplicity, functionality, and minimalism. It emerged in the early 20th century from the northern region, mainly Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland. It became a global trend recognised in the 1950s thanks to renowned designers and architects.

Scandinavian design has its roots in the harsh, dark Nordic winters, which call for functional, well-designed interiors and products. The Arts and Crafts movement and the Bauhaus school, with their emphasis on craftsmanship and minimalism, also played a role in shaping Scandinavian design.

Scandinavian design began in our interiors with furniture, textiles, ceramics and lighting, then spread to everything from architecture and electronics to clothing and fashion accessories.

Here some key points that define the best the Scandinavian design:

Simplicity

Simplicity is the heart of Scandinavian design. Products have clean lines, uncluttered surfaces, and straightforward forms. This simplicity reflects the idea of removing the unnecessary and focusing on what truly matters.

Functionality

Scandinavian design marries form and function seamlessly. Furniture is not just aesthetically pleasing but also practical. Pieces are designed with the user's needs in mind and for everyday use.

Natural Materials

Scandinavian design emphasizes the use of natural materials such as wood, stone, and leather. These materials add warmth and texture to spaces - in particular light-colored wood that is commonly used in furniture and flooring.

Light and Space

Natural light providing by large windows and open spaces are key features in Scandinavian homes, promoting a sense of airiness and connection to nature. The color palette is typically light and neutral to enhance the feeling of brightness.

Hygge

This Danish concept embodies comfort and coziness. It's about creating a warm and inviting atmosphere where people can relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Elements like candles, plush textiles, and comfortable seating contribute to the hygge ambiance.
